The Media Ecology Association (MEA) takes your privacy seriously. The following explains the types of information you may provide to us and that we collect about you, how we use that information, and who we may share it with. This Privacy Policy only applies to information you supply or that we collect in connection with the use of our website.
What We Collect
Information You Provide
Visitors who use the MEA website to join or renew a membership, register for an event, make a donation, contact us, or schedule a Virtual Coffee appointment, may be asked to provide personally identifiable information.
This information includes, but is not limited to, things such as:
- your name
- your email address
- you institutional or organizational affiliation
- your mailing address, including your country
- your phone number
Members can update their profile information, privacy settings, and email preferences at any time by logging into their account profile or by contacting us.
Information We Collect
The MEA uses Wild Apricot’s association management software. Please see their Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. For the purposes of member management, we use Wild Apricot to track things such as:
- your membership level and status
- how long you’ve been a MEA member
- whether you’ve agreed to various MEA policies
- events you’ve registered for
- a history of your invoices and payments
- your last login date
- whether you’ve made any donations to the MEA
- your profile settings
- email opens and link clicks
Third-Party Services
We use a number of third-party services on our website. We have no control over the privacy practices of these services and only rely on them selectively.
For instance, we use:
- PayPal for membership and event registration payments but the MEA doesn’t access or store any of your financial information. Please see PayPal’s Privacy Policy.
- Wufoo to collect and store information for the purpose of scheduling Virtual Coffee appointments. Please see their Privacy Policy.
- Intellect Discover to enable MEA members to access current and back issues of Explorations in Media Ecology. Please see their Privacy Policy.
Note: Although MEA maintains a presence on various social media platforms (e.g., Facebook and Twitter), and Wild Apricot lets members link their profiles to Facebook and Google, those platforms are not operated by the MEA and thus are subject to the privacy policies of those various companies, not this Privacy Policy.
How We Use the Information You Provide and We Collect
The MEA uses the information you provide us and that we collect to communicate with you about your membership and MEA activities. We may also use it to analyze membership trends in order to provide more relevant services and programming, as well as to answer questions and provide support.
Who We May Share Your Information With
The Media Ecology Association limits who can access your personal information and does not sell it to third parties. In most cases, access to it is restricted to MEA board members, or a subset of MEA board members.
We may share it with other associations, academic institutions, and service providers as needed for the purpose of delivering event programming such as our annual convention or to fulfill member benefits such as when we share members’ names and mailing addresses with Intellect, the publisher of our journal Explorations in Media Ecology, and their affiliates.
Otherwise, we will only disclose your personal information if we have your consent to do so, or we are compelled to do so by law.
